St. Michael's Medical Center

Established by the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor in 1867, Saint Michael's Medical Center is a 357-bed regional tertiary-care, teaching, and research center in downtown Newark, N.J. Saint Michael's was the first medical institution in New Jersey to perform open-heart surgery, and the first to develop a cardiac catheterization program.

Saint Michael’s is a teaching affiliate of New York Medical College, offering residencies in anesthesia, internal medicine and podiatry, as well as fellowships in cardiology, interventional cardiology, gastroenterology, oncology, infectious disease, pulmonary and critical care.

Conditions for the sale of Saint Michael’s to California-based Prime Healthcare are awaiting approval by New Jersey state regulators as of February 2016. Prime Healthcare Services operates 38 acute-care hospitals providing nearly 40,000 jobs in 11 states.
